The woodland are merely witnesses to our brief lives. They cycle with endless consistency through the seasons, and we see what we want to see in them.  There is no season more adept at amplifying our inner thoughts than Vermont stick season, the time between the cacophony of fall colors and the brilliant white and blues of winter.   The thick gray sky bears down on the naked landscape leaving only the tree trunks, like black smudges on a muted canvas.

Stick season can be the peaceful absence of noise or deafening silence. Infinite grays and textures can turn into a colorless void. Grateful solitude can yield to isolation.  And depression, like a flightless bird, envelopes hope.

It is wait-time for me, until the snow falls and bathes every surface in light.

Ting One and Thing Two, small sculptures of plaster and paper cache clay.

Thing One and Thing Two. 2022 14” x !4” x 8” (variable)

Kathleen Volp’s exhibition Pointed features small groupings of juxtaposed geometric forms made primarily from plaster, paper pulp, and clay. The works' seductively tactile surfaces range from sublimely smooth and glossy to rough and blistered. In the intimately scaled piece Squaring the Circle? a small, deflated rubber ball attempts to envelop a cube. Skeletal cones and spheres mingle with more solid cousins, while a ziggurat sneaks away on wobbly legs. Velvety black and neon pink forms embody unexpected depth and weight in stark contrast to large, hollow, upended cones insistent on defying gravity.  In Pointed, Volp displays humor and intrigue in the most elemental: shapes, surface, minimal color, and subtle shifts of light and shadow.

Opening Reception
Thursday, March 8, 2018 6 – 8 pm

Curated by Catherine Carter

Otherworldly" features six artists whose work conjures an environment that is both familiar and fantastical. We are drawn in by a hazy sense of recognition, but closer contact reveals a realm of new and unexpected visions, emotions, ideas. Have we been here before? Maybe, in some dream or altered state. We are not sure, and yet some element of remembered experience calls to us from within the work.
